Have you tried the double nut / stud removal method?  It seems like it is
going to be pretty difficult to take off this nut. Also, what is meant by
leaving the throttle open when doing a compression test, does this simply
mean holding the gas pedal to the floor?

1-1/2 inches equals 38.1mm, and is a size that is readily
available.
