RE: Effective Siphon Pumps?
John Katos wrote, on the subject of draining gas tanks:
"Dave have you checked the bottom of the tank? Most tanks which do not feed
from the bottom have a drain plug on the bottom."
Yes, the Sprint tank does have a drain plug, which requires a giant hex
drive (thoughtfully included in the comprehensive toolkit that comes with
the car). This is what I was using to drain the tank after I found the
siphon pump to be useless. It was still rather messy, mainly because the
tank is unfortunately full. (Why is it that I always fill the tank on cars
I am about to dissassemble? On second thought, don't answer that!).
My largest drain pan holds only about two gallons, so I still end up getting
a lot of gas on my hands, not to mention the copious amount which splashed
on my garage floor from the extremely rapid flow. Once drained, there is
still the problem of what to do with it. I have been decanting it into my
wife's car, a few gallons at a time into a mostly full tank in case it has
degraded while sitting.
The whole process is very unpleasant and rather hazardous, which is why I
wondered if anyone had a better method. Restorers who do this regularly
must surely avoid the mess. I had speculated that I could just energize the
fuel pump to drain it, but I would imagine this would be very slow on a
carburated car.
Thanks,
Dave J.
