Wow, great advice, and then get seat time, lots and lots of seat time,
never miss a chance for seat time. Then go back to school to work out
those bad habits you are sure to pick up. Buy a sprint kart and race
twice a week. With 7 turns every 30 seconds and no straight more then 3
breaths long your mind will get sharp.

When it comes to modifying the car, if competition is your goal, I have
some ideas that some will call heresy. Engines are cool, engines are
sexy, engines are seductive and engines are the worst pace to put your
resources. Assuming no major problems with ether engine or chassis the
return on investment seems to me to be something like 3:1. For the unit
of time that $1 in engine mods buys in reduced lap time, $0.30-0.50 will
do in the chassis.
