Originality vs Safety?

Hello all.  I have a 73 Spider with the single chrome outside rearview mirror 
on the drivers door. When I am driving in heavy traffic, I find myself 
craning my neck everywhich way in order to make sure that the lane changes 
are clear and safe because the mirrors are completely inadequate.  This is 
definitely not fun. How much of a gaffe would I be committing if I change 
this with a pair of vitaloni mirrors(one for each side)? I  want to keep the 
car original but safety is a definite concern. Thanks   Tito
