RE: Alfetta starter solenoid current draw

HI Stefano,

I saw your enquiry on the AD about the Alfetta starter solenoid.

from my AR Alfetta Inspection Manual data.

Depending on the starter fitted to your model the solenoid current draw
varies between 38A to about 55A.

Here are the details from the AR manual.

Starter type
116.00.05.030.10
Magnettia Marelli
E95-0.9/12
@9V = <55A

116.08.05.030.00
Bosch
0.001.211.207
EF-12V-0.7CV
@9V = <40A

105.12.05.030.03
Bosch
0.001.311.110
GF-12V-1.1PS
@9V = 38A

I use a 3A push-button on the dash of my Alfetta race car with a 30A relay
to operate the starter solenoid. For intermittent use (as a starter
normally is) the 30A relay seems to hold up OK. The current drawn through
the standard igniton switch is more than I would use if I was designing the
vehicle!

In case you are interested the solenoid current draw is not totally wasted
pulling in the starter gear. The way the solenoid is wired the current
returns to ground via the main starter armature, so the 30A or so of
solenoid current is added to the current from the starter contacts.
