broad emissions equipment question

i have a general question about something i know
almost nothing about:
at some point it seems that alfa has worked with all
sorts of equipment to meet emissions standards: EGR,
VVT, etc. so, i'm curious as to how alfa managed to
engineer away the necessity for things like EGR (for
comparison a 1990 oldsmobile 3.0L V6 had EGR, while
the alfa 3.0L V6 didn't) before or while other co's
were adding them. (or, is this just a sampling error
on my part?)
