re: California emissions question
Eric -
If you have a tweaked motor you do not think will pass California smog,
but think that it *may* pass, I would suggest going to a shop which has
an exhaust gas analyzer to get an idea as to how close you are. If
indications are that it could pass, then go for it. If the indications
that you would be called a gross polluter, and have the smog nazis come
an impound you and your car (not really likely at all, but it goes give
a chilling image, no?) then go for the stock cam (and/or other parts
that would be necessary) and see if that makes the difference you would
need to get clean bill of health.
I think the cheep rate for a smog check and cert is on the order of $40
- $50. There used to be a limit (sliding scale based on how old the car
is) on how much a shop could charge for repairs before the state
acquiesces and says enough is enough. If that limit/exemption still
exists, it refers to a stock vehicle. If it has been modified, then the
$$$ limits do not apply.
Best of luck in your endeavor. and, btw - Welcome to Southern
California.
