Tim,
I think going with what brand and weight oil the Alfa
factory manual says is the main point, regardless of
what era your car's tranny is from.
Some of the other car clubs, like BMW, are stressing
brands like Redline MTL, Amsoil, Lubromoly ect...or a
blend of a GL-4 rated synthetic that contains no
reactive sulfur(Redline MTL)and a API GL-1 grade oil
in the older Gertag transmissions. It seems the main
reason for going with a synthetic in any of these
*non-Alfa* gear-boxes is to improve cold weather
shifting and reduce 2nd gear crunch (sounds familiar
eh?).
The bottom line for me is that the shifting in my '87
Milano improved GREATLY by switching to Shell Spirax.
