Tire Sizes - Help for the math impaired
OK,
I have gotten bugged about this one. As a result, I have been busy
researching the issue and have discovered the following:
1. The tire calculator at www.veloce.nu says the 165/80-14 is pretty close
to the same as 185/70-14.
2. The tire calculator at www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html says that a
165/80-14 tire's overall diameter is 24.4", while a 185/70-14 is 24.2".
3. The tire calculator at www.powerdog.com/tiresize.cgi agrees with the
above.
4. The tire calculator at
www.secret-secret.com/turbo/DIY/tirecalc/turbotire.html also agrees with the
above.
5. The tire calculator at www.miata.net/cgi-bin/tirescgi also agrees.
6. The tire calculator at toy4two.home.mindspring.com/tire.html (which
comes from the tirerack) gives similar info.
7. The very detailed calculator at
www.venommotorsports.com/howto/wheeldiameters.htm also agrees.
8. Ditto the calculator at www.greenhydrant.com/~drees/auto/tirecalc/
I think I'll stop there, although there are lots of other tire size
calculators on the net. I also checked out the Michelin XAS in 165R14
sizing at www.coker.com and found that it has an OD of 24.5" (which agrees
closely with the tire calculators).
I hope this helps to clear this issue up.
Cheers,
Alex Csank
