Electric fan in 87 Spider?

I followed the recent electric fan thread with great interest.  Then 
I remembered (or THOUGHT I remembered) something about not being able 
to switch to an electric fan in 80s Spiders.  Is this right?  If so, 
what makes it impossible?  My feeling is that it's a clearance issue 
or my memory's wrong.
