At the January AROO meeting, I won a nifty video in a
drawing:
"Alfa Romeo: The story of a legendary marque" (Duke
Video, 47 mins), apparently part of a larger series
called "Great Racing Cars."
Not bad altogether -- many GREAT shots of Grand Prix
events from the 1930s in particular, showing the
rivalry with the Mercedes and Auto-Union teams in the
last years before the war. Less information is
included on the Alfa racing cars of the 1950s and '60s
-- fans of the 105 Coupe, for example, are treated to
a three-second fly-by during a transition between the
last Mille Miglia cars (the 6C3500M) and Alfa's return
to F1 with Bernie Ecclestone's Brabham team.
Chief annoyances are the absolute inability of the
British narrator to pronounce any Italian name not
associated with a well-known foodstuff. But as a
cornucopia of prewar racing footage, this is a lot of
fun -- and as a FREE GIFT, it's a real thrill.
(In fact, I found it interesting that I won this
cassette the night that our club officers announced
the dues increase of $15 a year, and here I win a
video with a price tage of $20. Sweet mother of
Gumby, I'm $5 up on the deal! Now THAT'S what you get
for Keeping The Faith...)
