The same to you, my dear, with knobs on?



Hello list,

I am curious to hear people's opinions on how to deal with the issue of 
replacing shifter knobs on late 70's-early 80's spiders. I'm talking about 
those hard plastic affairs with the fake woodgrain stain/paint which wears 
off, revealing a lovely dirty white which proceeds to crack and gather yet 
more dirt. Sometimes you see originals (in new condition) of these for sale 
on ebay and at dealers, but wouldn't the same thing happen with that 
woodgrain? One thing I really want to avoid is the aftermarket set-screw type 
option. I have found this type liable to loosen and pop off when you least 
want it to... you know, just like those antique cut-glass doorknobs. What 
about the idea of getting a genuine wood one from an earlier Spider? Would 
this type thread onto the shifter of an '81? Or how about the billet alloy 
type that IAP offers with the threaded insert? I do like the look of those... 
I only hesitate, I guess, because they are not original Alfa.
