Delayed electricity in '86 spider
1986 spider Quad. On a good day, when I put the key in the ignition and
turn it, the instrument cluster lights up with temp, oil, alternator
warnings and a buzzer. I turn the key further and it starts. On a bad day,
when I put the key in and turn it on, nothing happens. I can turn further
and the starter motor runs but, of course, no start.
If I take the key out and start over, eventually I get indicator lights and
the car starts. It doesn't feel like jiggling the key makes the difference
but I've always been able to run after a few tries.
Is the ignition switch the most likely culprit, or is there a sticky relay
somewhere? I've got the shop manual and the CD-ROM and get very mixed
messages about where there are relays in the wiring. Many of the relays
that are in the pictures are NOT in the wiring diagram. But whatever the
problem is, it affects the warning lights, not just the fuel pump or
computers.

PS, is there a source for a parts book for the '86 spider? I haven't found
one yet.
