Because the gasoline engine can operate at a constant RPM/Load at its most
efficient point, and the electric motors do the speed changing.  A regular
engine/transmission arrangement is always changing RPMs and most of its time
not at its peak efficiency.

Continuously variable transmissions that are now starting to appear take the
same principle, keeping the engine at its efficiency peak most of the time,
and when you really step on it, rev up the engine to its power peak to
really go!
