Spider Performance

Zamani is right, especially with Alfa Spiders, they're not made to race or compete with any car. They're made for beauty, fun under the sun and cruising around for chicks. I bought my 91 spider because I like to own one of the most beautiful spiders ever made. It's nice to drive, cruise around town and the sunny California coasts. My car has over 100k miles now with original engine and everything, it can get up to 90MPH barely but it starts right up and drives.
It doesn't pull as strong my GTV6 did, nor my BMW convertible, nor the Porche boxter, nor the Honda 2000, but it does give me a great feeling of zapping through corner with their short gears transmission.
I don't think the body is made for high torque or high speed engine. The body flexes too much. I don't believe the drive shaft and the rear axle can even stand the high performance or torquee engine.
Talking about all these gadget high performance parts out there, I paid my dues and I don't fall for them any more. I spent thousands of dollars on my 77 Lancia Scorpion,94 GTV6 on cams, exhausts, clutches, air filters... etc.. and I got a few more mile per hour on the freeway to get tickets more often. Of the line, my original engine was quicker and I don't have to hear these loud noise from "high performance air cleaners and freeflow exhaust", and the best thing is I don't have to worry about making the smog to pass every 2 years.
If the car is made to be fast, it should be fast from the start. Car manufacturers pay millions dollars for engineers to design cars and we're trying to buy these 'claimed high performance' parts from these "engineering firms" for street car racing to make our cars better on strictly regulated US streets?

$3500 for the car, $500 to make it drivable and lots of crawlings under the car to tighten all these lose nuts and bolts, my car is solid and dependable, beautiful and fun, I can't ask for more. I've drove 7k miles in 5 months, save the mileage on the 98 AUDI A6. At average of 30cent a mile, if the car lasts 1 year, it pays for itself.

If I use the phrase "you can't beat a dead horse", it may not be appropriate, but pouring money in a 4 banger that designed for cruising to make it a race car or high performance car is totally uncall for.

May your alfas start up every day and revs with great sounds,

Louis,
