Berlina Fusi, berlina Tabucchi
All this nice "can can" about the berlina/Berlina is
simply answered if you consider that here the
"berlina" describes a type of car and itsn't a name
for a car. Yes, in the past there were also cars named
"berlina" in the official pricelist: the Peugeot 306
sedan was called (and there was written so on the
cars) Peugeot 306 berlina.
Anyway, Fusi is sure a good whtiness, considering the
high percentage of errors in D'Amico / Tabucchi very
expensive book. The question about the berlina/Berlina
has its reason to be "solved" about the 1750.
Starting from the fact that "1750 berlina" means 1750
sedan, usually in the past (my father is an old
Alfista and I spoke often, in the past and actually,
about the '70s facts, even if I was born in 1973) the
"berlina" was accompanied to the "1750". It was so
even if noone book, brochure, pricelist had the name
"1750 berlina" written. The 1750 was the sedan, the
1750 GT Veloce was the car named, usually, in 1000
different ways: "millesette e mezzo gt", 1750 GTV,
1750 GT, "the" GTV, "the" GT (without distinction if
1300 or 1600 or 2000. Normal people when see a Spider
name simply "spider" as for the GT Junior / GT Veloce
name it "GT".
This was was different from ALfetta: the Alfetta was
the sedan, the GTV become the ALfetta GT. The first
Alfetta GT or the last GTV 6 are named, by normal
people, simply "GTV". My friend Gippo Salvetti, who
wrote "alfazioso" (see www.alfazioso.it) wrote an
article very funny and interesting about this way to
name the cars. Also the same Alfa Romeo called, inside
itself, the Giulia 1300 TI as "Giulia 1300 T".
Anyway, in my opinion (perhaps the last and low
interesting, but I know the name very well) the best
solution was to call "1750 berlina" the sedan. When I
see about a "1750 berlina" or a "1750" in Italy I
surely wait for a 1750 sedan. When I see "Berlina" in
Germany or in US I wait for a 1750 or 2000 sedan,
because in the brochure is cleary written the name
"berlina" referring to the sedan, sometimes without
the "1750" or "2000" name.
Anyway, call them as you want, but love your Alfas!
