Milano Oil leak

Hi, am looking for a little advice regarding the maintenance of my Milano
2.5 It has developed an anoying oil leak at the back of the engine. It's
definetely noticable and leaves nice stains in my parking spot. But it
doesn't leak oil that much that I have to add some between oil changes.
My mechanic told me that in order to fix this the engine will have to be
pulled, since it's most likely the rear main seal or the cigarette seals.
Does that sound right?
What I want to know is, if I am going to get the engine pulled and torn
appart, what else should be taken care off while we are in there? Since I
am check book mechanic, I'd like to not have to pay for removing the engine
more often than necessary. What does it entail to get to the main seals.
Should I have the valve guides changed? Pistons?
The car has about 110,000 miles on it.
Unfortunately I am a novice when it comes to these kind of things, so any
advice would be appreciated.
My theory is that, I can live with the leak, until it gets worse, or if
something else goes wrong with the engine. Then just have everything fixed.
  Sound reasonable?
