Ohhh, uggggh. Once the axle shafts had been removed from (old) Alfetta
GT yesterday, made the mistake of turning the rear hubs. Right hub, not
bad, not wonderful. Left hub, uuuunh, Did Not Sound Good.
Those one of you who have been following 'Biba's growley rear end' saga,
are / is saying, "Ahha." My gut feeling is it didn't help the bad,
naughty sounds emanating from my rear, but only contributed. When one
drives at 55 in 4th, shifts into 5th, holding the speed, and growley
sound lessens, don't see how the main culprit could be solely the rear
hub bearing / bearings.
Replacing the bearings has been discussed fairly recently, but couldn't
find it. Could someone point me in the right direction? As I recall, one
needs a team of NASA engineers, at least 22 of the 27 required Factory
Tools, and sincere prayer before removing even one.
As I also recall, when donor Alfetta was up on stands, don't believe the
sounds were bad at all from rear hub bearings.
Would I be better off (time / money wise) 'simply' swapping The DeDion
part of the rear assemblies?
I'd feel guilty, but would love to have 'Old Red' back sooner, rather
than later.
