Volume 08 : Number 358 Trans Mount Change

To change a spider/gtv/berlina trans mount:
Remove bracketry and speedo cable, lift front of engine to droop down the
rear of trans (pay attention to fan/radiator clearance)
Take propane torch in left hand
Medium ball peen hammer in right hand
Heat housing
Heat/tap on old mount until it slides out
[you can get the aluminium hot enough that the old mount will just push out by
hand (don't burn your hand, dummy)]
New mount will slide right in
[you can heat the aluminium enough that the new mount will slide in with no
pounding, or you can tap on it a bit with the hammer. If you find yourself
POUNDING it would probably be better to use a drift to knock it back out from
the other side and heat again. You don't need to get the torch near the new
mount. I once saw some mounts that were made wrong (.009" too large), but I
would never expect that again. BEAR IN MIND THAT IF YOU OVER HEAT IT,
ALUMINIUM DOES NOT GET RED OR ANYTHING, IT JUST SLUMPS AND THEN YOU ARE S.O.L.
I have only heard of this going wrong once, by a guy using an acetylene
torch... and I have done it tons of times (correctly) myself. Its easy, and
you will laugh at yourself for thinking of messing around with making pullers,
etc....

Driving FWD is like wearing a rubber.
