audi vs alfa: my 2 cents

FWIW, this weekend I had some seat time in a friend's A4 (1998 vintage) and 
absolutely loved it.  This was a 1.8 Turbo Quattro, with upgraded computer 
chip, exhaust, and intake (about $2000 worth of parts).  This car also had 
the Audi "Sport" option package, which includes stiffer and lower springs.  
Handling and ride were very nice - firm and direct but didn't jar any 
fillings loose.  The engine was the best part though - at 3000 rpm the turbo 
starts spooling up and a giant wave of torque just rockets you down the 
road.

Nice car, and there are oodles of them coming off 3 year leases all the 
time, so they're reasonable to buy used.  Would certainly make a nice daily 
driver until something better comes along.
