Back to Alfa's future
Leonardo's observations from Italy provide a refreshing perspective on the
ongoing turmoil at Fiat and accompanying questions about the future of the
Alfa Romeo brand. Leonardo wrote "So, please, let be a bit serious:
italians need a car which can be compared, also in mechanical layout, to
the Mercedes and BMW, not to the Peugeot. The rest of world will follow the
same steps of the italian."
I would read this advice from a forward-looking, but tradition-conscious
Italian as a call for Alfa Romeo to return to something like the position
it had in the 1960s. In those days, Alfa Romeo was probably a more
respected name than BMW, which still had not found its automotive niche;
the cars bearing the Alfa Romeo name cost as much as comparable BMW models,
and they were not considered to be a poor man's alternative to something
more desirable.
