I have a set of Shankle headers on my Verde. Off the shelf, these can be
frighteningly difficult to install, and keep installed. Some mechanics
refuse to deal with them.
Here's what I did:
1) Had Paul Glynn reinforce the flanges at the tubing - off the shelf they
are spot welded, and the flanges can bend over time, leading to leaks. Paul
welded the flange/tube intersection all the way around, then milled the face
of the flange for a nice flat surface.
2) On the recommendation of digester Don Happel, I had Paul weld the
header/downpipe bolts to the headers. This means that one person can bolt
things up from underneath. Before I did this, removal or installation of
the header/downpipe bolts would make a grown man cry. Now it's a simple
job.
I also had the headers and downpipes HPC treated, which makes for much
cooler underhood temps.
All is well now, only one more tiny leak (at the cat) to deal with and it's
perfect again!
