164LS/Q Heater Core

My heater core was "accessed" by the dealer  (Cammisa near San Francisco) twice under warranty. Both times it was due to an unacceptable smell of coolant when the heat was on.  First time they tightened some hoses, second time they replaced the core. The problem is still there, but much less so. I can confirm the magnitude of the work is about 8 hours by the book. 

If it was my car in a moderate climate, I might consider bypassing the core and making-do with the electric butt warmer!

Well after looking under the 164Q again, and talking to the esteemed Bill
 Daemke, it seems pretty certain the heater core on my car is shot. 

 I'll ask a question that I think I know the answer to - how difficult is this
 to replace? Is this a similar procedure to replacing stepper motors?
