I always thought that the Ford GT40 program was the result of being snubbed
by Ferrari (in favor of Fiat).  My understanding was that Ferrari let Ford
spend a lot of time and resources to evaluate and set the value of the
company, when he never intended to sell it to a non-Italian interest.  When
that became clear to Ford, they built the GT40 to specifically to beat
Ferrari at their own game.
