"Refinishing" 75-82 Spider Bumpers (The Rubber Uglys)

Hello:

Is there a way to "refinish" the black rubber bumpers for the 75-82 Spiders? 
  Specifically, are they sandable?  How to get the original "semi-gloss" 
rubbery finish back ?

A previous owner of my 74 Spider installed the front clip from a 76 Spider 
onto my 74 (cheap PO reaction to a front end collision).  Then he applied 
some type of laquer/shelac on the bumpers to make them shiny (which has 
resulted in a crappy looking set of bumpers over time).

I'm thinking of wet-sanding the gunk off and then "dressing" the resultant 
"raw" rubber with Bumper Black or something similar.

Anybody got some pointers ?
