Hello down under, John. I just went through the sloppy rack scenario the 
other day. After remembering past posts about the rack mounting bolt working 
loose, I checked mine and wouldn't you know it. They were loose. Not by much, 
maybe  1 turn with the socket. But that play transferred through the gearing 
of the rack and left about 2 inches of "dead space" in the steering wheel. 
After the bolts were removed and cleaned, loc-tited, and tightened, the play 
went away.  I hope this helps.
