moly gearboxes
From Jacob:
>>So does this mean that later moly-synchro gearboxes (post whatever year
seems to apply) can take an EP oil after all? That would sure open up the
market somewhat since the Dentax was somewhat difficult to source.<<
I have a gearbox out of a 1967 Giulia Super (that I've owned since 1978 and
which I'd bet money has never been messed with) sitting in my living room
with the orange "Use EP oil only" sticker still on it; I checked it last
night. So I believe the answer to the above question is yes, moly gearboxes
do require EP oil.
I had always heard, anecdotally, that moly gearboxes were introduced during
the 1967 model year; early cars have Dentax boxes and later cars have moly
boxes. I can't document it though. I had a 750 Sprint a few years ago that
had a 101 5-speed in it that had non-moly synchros, at least that's how they
looked from peering in through the filler plug.
