Another story, and I've forgotten where I heard this one, was that the
streets in Italy were often made of dirt, but generally had stone curbs.
With the steering wheel on the right, a gentleman could step out of his car
without getting his shoes dirty!

Pretty far fetched, but it's a good story. (One wonders what our
gentleman's lady was left to do???)
