Tim Hancock of Boston (the other one...out East) pretty well defines
blueprinting and the reasons why in issue #221
One of the ironies when blueprinting an Alfa 2 liter or under engine /
block is many of the blue printing key 'points' don't work really well
on these blocks. A major blueprinting aspect (if I understand it
correctly) is to make sure the top of the block is Absolutely parallel
to the the main bearings / crank, and the cylinders are exactly 90
degrees to this axis.
When you have great big honkin' studs sticking up, it is difficult (but
understand, not impossible) to mill the top of the block if required.
Then you have removable liners which don't exactly lend themselves to
being bored out, liners inserted and precisely rebored 90 degrees to the
mains / top of block.
Thought I'd throw this out so those who Really know can disagree.
