Importing Alfas into the USA
I don't believe titling the car would be a problem. The biggest problem would be to get it to clear US CUSTOMS! If you can clear Customs than titling it should be easy. If you can't clear Customs you'll never have a chance to title the car. There were many Montreals that came in the country and titled as GTV's in the '70's. Back before computers and before anyone knew what Alfas are suppose to look like.
I have a friend who recently brought in a Montreal (serial #002) from Switzerland. Since the car was older than 20 years it did not have to go for inspection or DOT. All he needed to register the car was go to the main DMV in NJ and show pictures of the car and the import papers that it cleared US CUSTOMS. He got the title (as a Montreal), registeration, and plates.
I also know some who has a '96 Spider in NJ. It was never titled or registered because he is a used car dealer and uses the used car dealer plates on the car. He also brought in a Fiat Bravo. I have no idea how he cleared Customs and he won't tell me either.
The only other car I know that was imported legally was Larry Auriana's 164Q All-Wheel Drive. He spent $75,000 to bring the car in with all the DOT and correct paper work. But then again he's got more money than god so it didn't matter how much he spent.
You could always try the "Bill Gates" law. Bring in rare collectable cars as "show cars", but I don't know the details on that.
