Off topic, but...



Desmodromic valves merely refer to the fact that they are positively closed
and don't rely on a spring.  Yes, the Mercedes M-196 had them as did the
SLR (same engine?), but so did the Packard V-12 used in WW II PT boats and
my first Minesweeper (built in the mid-50's), so they have been around for
a long time.  As for the rotating spherical valves question that started
the thread, if he had said rotating cylindrical valves, I'd say it was
similar to some British aero engines of the '40's where a concentric
cylinder at the top of the engine cylinder both rotated and reciprocated
with respect it, opening up ports at the right time.  This is like sleeve
valves, but do sleeve valves usually rotate, too?
