La Carrera - 10/27 report
I still haven't received an e-mail from the drivers or crew of the 1960 Alfa
Sprint team (they must be having trouble finding a modem link?) but I did
manage to get some information from Dianne Besic, Mike's wife, who apparently
spoke to Mike by telephone late last night (10/26) after the PanAmericana's
first stage. She reports:
"As of 11:00 PM last night all is going well the guys. The crew was enjoying
dinner (sea bass) while the drivers were at a meeting. They might be third in
class, Mike wasn't sure until the guys came back from the drivers meeting.
No real problems with the car. I guess on the 26th ,the first day of the
race, the drivers went out about 8:40 & then they let the crews follow after
around 9:00 am, so if any had any problems they would find them on the side
of the road. Another 80+ day, Mike said there was a Porsche & a Studebaker on
the side of the road & the GTV was having problems with their generator (they
managed to borrow a spare from a guy who had a Volvo).
When the crew arrived in Oaxaca there were speed bumps, big ones, so the kids
would stand on top of them, & wait for you to stop & then the kids would wait
for a postcard or candy, so the crew took a handful of candy & threw out at
the crowds.
Mike said when they got to Oaxaca he worked in this very rocking parking lot,
crawled around underneath the car, to make sure everything was all right, &
it was. He also worked on the communications system, & added an extra
overflow bottle since the car still running a little hot at times."
So far, so good.....
