VR6 is really DOHC
The VW VR6 is a narrow angle V6 at 15 degrees, so has a single head with
two cams. It is a configuration which defies conventional nomenclature.
More interesting yet is the WR8 which combines two VR4 type narrow angle V4
in a fascinating interwoven configuration with two single heads, each DOHC
but operating half of each V4. Still seems an odd way to build an engine.
Reminds one of the unnecessary complexity of BRM's H16 which was such a
disastrous power plant, lots of power (450 hp from 1.5 l supercharged in 1965!)
