My guess would be an air leak somewhere after the AFM. Higher RPMs open the
AFM up and full throttle sends the car into rich, open-loop operation.
Disconnecting the O2 sensor also sends the car into open-loop, I believe.

To diagnose, you can try the famed "propane test" covered in previous
Digests (play an unlit, open propane torch around and about the leak
suspects and listen for a change in idle -- will go up if the system starts
sucking the propane.) 

If the leak proves to be cracks in the big, black air pipe, you might have
some luck with painting it with black PlastiDip (the stuff tool handles are
dipped in and available at many hardware stores.) I had excellent results
after cleaning the big hose with a strong mixture of detergent and water to
remove built-up grease.

Also, replace the fuel injector seals if not done recently, they age and
leak. New ones are very cheap and readily available...I found them in stock
at NAPA Auto Parts. Just about all L-Jetronic cars use the same size and
type of seal. I'm pretty sure they were in the system as Alfa GTV6 but they
might have been under 80's VW Golf. BE careful when disconnecting the fuel
rail, though, fuel is usually under pressure in there and will squirt all
over.
