oops (admitting a limited slip of the other sort)
I relied too heavily on memory (the first thing that goes? Whatever.) when I
said that the post-1972 105/115 cars all used the same axle with the new
pattern of fins on the sump which USA people often mention as the sign that it
is an LSD axle. The Giulia Nuova Super parts book (my copy 1974) says it does
not, and if it doesn't then the various late Juniors probably don't either.
But that does not alter the gist of my argument. The "signs" which are
usually cited (and were by Watry, Cabibbo, and Chalmers) are the pattern of
fins on the removable sump-plate on the bottom of the differential housing of
a 105/115 car. The late Giulia Nuova Supers used the same differential housing
(105.00.17.014.01) and sump plate (1365.32.054) as the earliest Giulia TI and
all other 105 fours up through the 1750, including the GTA; the 2000
differential housing (105.12.17.014.00) and corresponding sump plate
(105.12.17.184.00) are visibly different, and these differentials have
extensive internal differences - bearing sizes, seals, critical dimensions -,
as well as a different pattern of fins on the sump.
My point still holds despite that gap in my facts. There were limited slips
available as an option on the axles that used the 1365.32.054 sump with its
distinctive straight fins, and there were limited slips available as an option
on the axle that used the 105.12.17.184.00 sump with its different distinctive
pattern, which was also produced with conventional differentials. Andrew's and
Joe's (and Rex's) practical advice is probably correct in almost all cases in
the USA, as probably most if not all general consumer-market 1600 and 1750
cars built for this market came without limited slips and probably all 2000
cars built for this market came with limited slips, but the pattern of fins is
not otherwise related to the axle having or not having a limited slip.
Sorry about that error -
