2000 Berlina Motor - Head Removal

The 2L motor fitted to my Berlina has been standing for some time with a
blown head gasket. I never drained the cooling system The local Alfa Racing
& Restoration specialist reckons that there is a good possibility that it
has 'corroded' itself down & will be difficult to remove. 
Does anyone have any experience of 
(1) Exactly where it corrodes
(2) How to get it off with the least damage if I hit this problem - I i.e.
if I have to use force the best way & place to apply it.
(3) The best way to prepare it for removal (e.g.. spray oil in the plug
holes for a week etc.)
