There's a guy running one of these in Alfa Club events in New Zealand
with 1.7 16v Fuel Injected engine. The engine is reasonably standard
but still quite competitive against modified 1.7 8v engined Alfasud
racers. Installing the 16v in an Alfasud has been documented on a few
web pages. Can't find that bookmark at the moment... let me know if
you want the URL.

The 1.7 engined Alfasuds (8 valve) are also quite competitive against
the 2L GTV's on the twisty circuits. 150-180bhp in 800kg seems quite
effective.

Correct, this is all documented on Tim Rauen's Alfasud web site:
http://home.t-online.de/home/Rauen/home.htm

The Tom Zat car mentioned a few digests ago would have been a series 1.
Quite rare these days and for Classic/Historic racing it's lighter
than the later hatchback series 3 cars.

Series 1 and 2 cars (note boot hinges at the base of rear window):

Series 3 Alfasud with hatchback:

Regarding rarity of Alfasuds in general, I'm sure the percentage of
Alfasuds seen at Alfa Club meetings in New Zealand or Australia
would be higher than in Europe, the lack of salt on the roads being
a major factor.

Anyone in the USA considering one of these vehicals would probably
find they can mail order parts from Australia, NZ, UK from places
like Justsuds.... http://www.justsuds.com
