1969 Master Cylinder - Part III
FInally got everything reassembled and bled this weekend after rebuilding
the master cylinder on my 69 Berlina. It took me about half a dozen cycles
(right rear, left rear, right front, left front) to fully bleed the system
using a Power Bleeder. Other than running out of brake fluid once, the Power
bleeder made the process much easier. Now for the problem (there's always a
problem). I took the car out for a test drive, starting slowly and gradually
building up to harder and harder stops and the brakes were great. After
about 15 minutes I noticed that the brakes seemed to be getting harder and a
short while later the fronts were completely locked and wouldn't release. I
released the pressure at the left front caliper and was able to drive home
without further incident. So what did I foul up? I confess I did shorten the
master cylinder arm where it attaches to the brake pedal. I'm nearly 6' and
I figured another half inch of leg room would be nice. One non-Alfa book
said that pedal free play was a possible cause for too much pressure. If so,
does anybody have the procedure for adjusting the pedal height?
Thanks,
Mitch Wolberg,
