They didn't. I was fortunate to receive Jacob Haagerup's ad8-0038 post in an
off-digest CC; the "three fairly unique letters f,x,e " which he referred to
were a joined back-to-back a and e where the list got an f, an o with a
diagonal (upper right to lower left) through it where the list got an x, and
an a with a small halo over it where the list got an e.
To paraphrase Kermit the frog, it ain't easy being Danish. The umlaut at
least has an internationally recognized name, (two, actually, given the
diaeresis option) as do the cedilla, macron, tilde, breve, grave, acute, and
circonflex, but the Danish thingies seem to be nameless.
