re: speedo disassembly

First stop is here:

This is an article written by Willie R. and is pretty complete.

Here are my thoughts on my effort with my '74 spider speedo:
1) I used a cordless drill (at full charge) and an old speedo cable to get a
reference reading before I opened it up. Later, adjust calculating (best as
possible) from that reference.

2) You have to be willing to do a little damage to the chrome ring. The good
news is the ring is hidden by the "pod" upon reassembly.

3) I found the best tool for getting the ring off (for me) was a very small,
thin screwdriver. I worked my way around the ring, can-opener style,
numerous times. Work very slowly, and very carefully. The removal process
took me about 20 minutes. (the longer time goes on the more aggressive you
get and eventually you get there) - But don't break the front glass!!!!

4) Take the opportunity to clean the front glass

5) I dug into mine to adjust the speedo which was reading WAY high. In order
to make the speedo run slower you need to turn the adjusting screw out
(counter-clockwise). My problem was exaggerated because I'm running
195x60x14 tires. At some point the adjusting screw just falls out. I took
the screw ~almost~ to this point and then put a dab of chaulk on it (to hold
it from rattling out) and I'm still reading 3mph high (at 60mph) ... but
that's a lot better than it was.

good luck!
