William,

While I will not pretend to be a mechanical wizard, I have just dealt
with a very similar engine-cutting out problem on my '87 VW.
I wonder if the fact that you ran the tank dry has anything to do with it?
Soon after running my tank extremely low, my old tired fuel pump gave
up the ghost.  Just a thought.
