Russian wrenches/Soviet spanners

News item from the Wall Street Journal:

   March 3, 1998 -- Mir's crew is forced to put off a spacewalk 
   after breaking three wrenches while trying to unlock an outer hatch.

Were these Craftsman wrenches perhaps?

Or maybe the wrenches were made from an old batch of Soviet steel, the same

steel bought by Alfa in the 70s to make Alfetta bodies. In which case the 
wrenches broke due to rust fatigue.
