Valve Adjusting Shims

                   Alfisti,
     
            The early valve shims ( 101 series 1300 to around 1980 )
identified by thier smooth circumfrence were slightly softer than the later
shims identified by a groove running around the circumfrence. Actually the
grooved shims were designed for the V6s. I try to use only grooved shims on
the V6s but the 4cyls can use either or.
            Iv'e had reasonable luck grinding shims using a drop of oil on the
valve stem tip to "glue" the shim to the stem tip. If you make sure the shim
has a slow spin to it while grinding, the surfaces should remain parallel.Be
sure to polish the ground surface afterwards with 600 or so grit sandpaper.
