shims
The proper answer is to purchase the set(s) for a few hundred bucks.
You already know that. If you were to purchase a set, I'd favor the
thinner one -- it is clearances going to zero which cause problems.
Next best bet is a quick trip to a dealer to get the one you need. Need a
ride, or a second car. I did that, and they did not have the thinnest
one, which I needed.
So I bought the next thinnest one. Yes, they are hardened. <Very> hard.
I put the shim on a valve-stem, oiled, held perpendicualr to a wheel
suitable for cutting hard steel, and ground it down. Need to get them
pretty flat and even. A couple years ago. Difficult; not quite
impossible.
